1981

Heart of the Hunter

1981 is the time marker for a pivotal episode in Thobela Mpayipheli’s past: amid the press of a Metro carriage, he is mentally elsewhere, on the Transkei coast; moments later, he kills Marion Dorffling at close quarters. The date brings together the landscape that offers Thobela a vision of stillness and the violence through which that vision is shadowed.

Temporal and narrative setting

The shift to 1981 places the episode apart from the surrounding May 2003 setting. Its movement between the immediate encounter and Thobela’s inward coastal vision establishes a contrast: he is physically caught in a crowd, yet his attention turns toward a remote place associated with ancestry, silence, and the end of life.

The Transkei coast in memory

Thobela imagines a rocky point on the Transkei coast, where ranks of Indian Ocean swells travel a long distance before breaking against the rocks. Between the waves comes a brief, absolute calm. In that silence, he imagines hearing the voices of his ancestors—Phalo, Rharhabe, Nquika, and Maqoma—and understands his bloodline as both source and refuge. He associates that stillness with where he will go when death comes, making the remembered coast more than scenery: it is his imagined point of return.

The encounter with Dorffling

The scene turns from inward stillness to a close-range killing. Dorffling moves with the confidence of long practice, circling and measuring Thobela in an alley. When Dorffling demands to know what language Thobela is speaking, Thobela answers that it is Xhosa. He then attacks before Dorffling can drive a knee into his belly, puts an arm around the American’s neck, and thrusts a long, thin blade through his breastbone. He holds Dorffling against him as the man’s life ebbs.

Even in the killing, the passage gives weight to naming and acknowledgment. Dorffling attempts to say Umzingeli; Thobela gently corrects his pronunciation and watches his breathing stop. The poised, respectful correction stands in stark contrast to the sudden violence. Set beside the earlier vision of calm between waves, the scene makes 1981 a time in which death is at once an act Thobela inflicts and the stillness he imagines awaiting him.
